What changed after the conversation

Useful advice is visible in a clearer decision, a discarded assumption or a better question — not only in praise.

A commute changed the shortlist

“I had compared Berlin and Hamburg mostly through rent portals. Mapping my shift times showed that the cheaper Berlin flats I saved would leave me with awkward late-night journeys. Hamburg won for reasons I had not been measuring.”

Two careers, one weekly plan

“The family session gave equal weight to both jobs instead of treating my partner’s commute as flexible. We still had to do our own Kita calls, which was frustrating but clearly explained from the start. The action plan helped us choose temporary housing without locking into the wrong side of Cologne.”

A smaller search area in Munich

Daniel arrived with a list of 14 Munich districts gathered from colleagues, forums and estate agents. Several recommendations assumed a car, while his hospital shifts ended after the most convenient bus connections. The Neighbourhood Shortlist used his actual roster, cycling tolerance and warm-rent ceiling to reduce the search to five connected areas.

He did not rent in the top-ranked district; availability pushed him to the fourth. But the brief had explained that option’s longer cycle route and stronger S-Bahn fallback, so the choice was informed rather than improvised.

“The ranking was less important than understanding why each area was there. When I found a flat in Giesing, I knew which compromise I was making.”

Permission to reject the fashionable answer

“Leipzig suited our space budget and home-working week, but we worried that choosing it meant stepping away from opportunity. The comparison did not dismiss that concern. It separated the careers where Berlin proximity mattered from the ones where it did not.”

When the answer remained open

“I expected a decisive recommendation between Frankfurt and Berlin. Instead, Clara said my choice depended on an employer’s remote-work policy that was still unclear. Initially that felt inconclusive. The written brief gave me exact questions for HR, and the answer made Frankfurt the straightforward choice.”
