About Engine Wirebase

Advice with room for real life

We help people choose where to live in Germany before momentum, hearsay or a famous postcode makes the decision for them.

Why we began

Engine Wirebase grew from the same conversation recurring around Berlin kitchen tables: newcomers had researched residence permits and jobs in detail, but treated the city itself as a foregone conclusion. Some flourished. Others discovered too late that another German city would have offered a shorter commute, a more manageable rent, better access to family abroad or simply a rhythm they preferred.

We began offering independent city comparisons in 2019. The work is deliberately narrow. We do not receive referral fees from estate agents, developers, schools or moving companies, and we do not push clients toward a city because we sell services there.

Who does the work

Clara Weiss, lead adviser, has worked in newcomer support and urban orientation across Berlin, Hamburg and Leipzig. Her practice centres on interviews, local source research and translating broad wishes — “somewhere lively but not exhausting” — into concrete questions about districts, transport and housing.

Idris Mensah, family relocation researcher, focuses on the dependencies between employment, temporary accommodation, childcare, schools and registration. Having moved within Germany with a young family, he is particularly alert to plans that work for one adult while making the other person’s week impossible.

Our wider network includes independent immigration lawyers, tax advisers and education specialists. Referrals are made when a question falls outside our competence; no referral commission is accepted.

How we approach a recommendation

We separate facts, current indicators and personal judgement. Transport connections and asking rents can be checked. A neighbourhood’s atmosphere requires context. Whether that atmosphere suits you requires listening.

Recommendations therefore include trade-offs and uncertainty. We would rather leave two credible options on the table than manufacture certainty. Sources are dated, individual districts are distinguished from city-wide reputations, and legal or financial questions go to qualified professionals.

What we value

  • Specificity over slogans. A 35-minute transfer at 07:30 is more useful than “well connected.”
  • Independence over convenience. Our fee comes from the client receiving the advice.
  • Households, not profiles. Partners and children can have competing needs that deserve equal attention.
  • A liveable week. City choice is tested against ordinary mornings, errands, travel and rest — not only weekend highlights.
